Why sleep is important for good health

Share

Life is here to be enjoyed, right?

Jumping on your socials, spending time with family, meeting up with friends and socialising at parties. All these things are probably on your priority list! And to fuel all of this is, of course, sufficient sleep!

Sleep plays a really important role in helping to maintain your health and well-being1 so you can keep doing the things you love every day. Sure, you may occasionally push those late night boundaries and enjoy a great sleep in, the following day, but making sleep a priority can help you to keep up with your lifestyle and appreciate every day.

Why is sleep important for you?

As you know, all people need to sleep.

While their schedules and hours may vary, everyone’s doing it because it helps you awaken your best for your next adventure – whatever that may be.

Your body is like a biological machine: during your waking hours, you’re able to enjoy the sun or cruise the nightlife, with all of the parts working actively together. However, when you hit those sheets and drift off, your body goes into repower mode.

While you’re resting, your body is busy2,3:

  • Healing damaged cells and stimulating growth
  • Consolidating your thoughts and memories from the day
  • Boosting your immune system
  • Recovering from the day’s activities
  • Recharging your heart and cardiovascular system for the next day
  • Regulating your appetite and weight
  • Stabilising your blood glucose levels

These regenerative duties are important, which is why it’s recommended to get sufficient quality sleep every night to maintain good physical and mental health.1

For the average adult who needs to sleep for around 7 to 8 hours a day4, this is one-third of your life that you spend sleeping, which is definitely not unproductive. It plays a direct role in how full, energetic and successful the other two-thirds of your life can be.

So if you’re feeling a bit tired or lethargic, don’t forget to restore your body’s balance and get the shut eye you need. Here’s why.

The benefits of sleep

Everyone knows that refreshing feeling they get after waking from a good night’s sleep. There’s nothing better!

When you get enough quality sleep, you’ve given your body plenty of time to recharge, which helps you to feel more focused and alert and gives your body plenty of energy so you can be smiling all day.

So, don’t forget to make sleep a part of your regular routine, as a good balance can help you maintain excellent health today and every day.
