It's important to keep your CPAP Machine clean to stay healthy. Daily use to help you breathe better at night can lead to dirt and bacteria can build up, reducing its performance and shortening its lifespan. While it might seem overwhelming to add another step of weekly and even daily cleaning. It's important to make that habit so that you can get the most out of your treatment.
To make the effort easier we've put together some helpful tips for caring for it. We will focus on two key things to help maintain your CPAP machine :
Your CPAP machine might seem like it can take care of itself, but that's simply not the case. CPAP machines require regular checks to ensure the filters, tubing, and mask are functioning correctly. With a bit of effort, you can keep your device running smoothly and extend its lifespan, resulting in long-term cost savings.
Make sure to always disconnect your machine first, this is to protect both the machine and yourself. The main parts of the machine that should be cleaned weekly are the CPAP humidifier and CPAP tubing.
CPAP Cleaning Supplies :
1. A soft cloth
2. warm water
3. Mild, gentle soap, or a CPAP soap
Cleaning Steps :
1. Unplug your CPAP machine and disconnect the CPAP humidifier and CPAP Tubing. Ensure that the tubing is disconnected from your CPAP mask.
2. In a sink or tub, rinse the humidifier and tube with mild soap and warm water. Take the cloth to clean the inside of the humidifier and the outside of the tubing. Ensure that the tubing gets the soap mixture on the inside as well.
3. Rinse the humidifier and tube again with warm drinking water. We recommend using drinking water as there is a chance that the remaining water will evaporate during CPAP therapy.
4. Allow the humidifier to air dry on top of a flat surface with a towel before use.
To ensure the machine's longevity and your health safety, please make sure that the CPAP humidifier is clean, clear, and free of discoloration. If you find that there is leakage not coming from the CPAP tube after cleaning, check your mask for cracks or tears, as a faulty mask can disrupt sleep.
A Note on CPAP Machine Filters
We do recommend replacing the CPAP filter regularly. A dirty filter can reduce airflow and increase wear and tear on the machine. Most CPAP machines come with a reusable foam filter that should be cleaned regularly and replaced every six months or more frequently if it looks dirty or damaged.
Store Correctly to Last
Proper storage of your CPAP machine is also crucial to ensure its longevity. Store it in a clean, dry place away from moisture, dust, and other contaminants. Just like not leaving your car in the rain or extreme temperatures, protecting your CPAP machine from environmental factors will help it last longer.
A CPAP Machine servicing is when a professional checks your machine for any performance or machine issues it might have. This includes cleaning machine parts that we have professional tools for and fine-tuning any of the machine parts. Regular servicing can extend the life of a CPAP machine, and ensure that your CPAP therapy runs efficiently every night.
We recommend that the CPAP machine be serviced by a professional every six months. This will help ensure that your machine is functioning at its best and provide you with the quality sleep you need to tackle each day.
