In celebration of International Music Day on 1 October, we’re sharing our top picks for classic songs about or inspired by sleep and dreams!
We’ve picked a bunch of songs that may either elevate your mood and energy levels or help put you to sleep with their sombre melodies. Check out our top 8 sleep tunes below.
1. I'm Only Sleeping - The Beatles
Written by John Lennon as an ode to sleep, this song talks about the joy of spending the day in bed. There are few of us who wouldn’t appreciate the occasional lie-in!
2. You Make My Dreams Come True - Hall and Oates
Okay, so this song might not be about dreams in the literal sense. But we couldn’t miss out on listing a tune that brings such positive vibes. It’s impossible to listen to this song and not be put into a good mood!
3. Sweet Dreams Are Made of This - The Eurythmics
This song is a classic 80s banger. Be careful not to listen to it right before bed. Those catchy beats might keep you nodding your head instead of nodding off to sleep!
4. Lullaby - The Cure
Alright, the song title is a little misleading. It may sound like a lullaby to soothe you to sleep, but the lyrics reflect a nightmare. According to the band’s lead singer and songwriter, Robert Smith, it was inspired by his fear of sleep.
5. Dreams - The Cranberries
This is such an uplifting song. It’s perfect for listening to in the morning to start your day and make you feel inspired.
6. All I Have To Do Is Dream - The Everly Brothers
This is one of those harmonising songs you can’t help but sing along to. Unsurprisingly, this song sits on Rolling Stone magazine’s list of the 500 best songs of all time.
7. Chinese Sleep Chant - Coldplay
This is of Coldplay’s lesser-known songs. It was a hidden track on the group’s 2008 album, Viva la Vida, so it’s a bit of a secret gem. There are online rumours the song was written while the band members were under hypnosis, which may explain its blissful nature.
8. Mr Sandman - The Chordettes
It’s hard to believe that after more than 70 years, this catchy song is still so popular today. It’s racked over 50 million views of the song on YouTube.
The song references folklore character, The Sandman, who can put you to sleep and inspires beautiful dreams by sprinkling sand into your eyes.
