CPAP Therapy Treatment and Tips

How to get used to a CPAP machine (7 helpful tips)

For some people, getting started on CPAP therapy can be a challenge. Learning how to sleep with a mask, tubing, and adjusting to the pressure of your CPAP machine is not always easy.

Thankfully, there are a few things you do to help you get used to your CPAP machine – so you can get the most out of CPAP therapy.

It doesn't matter if you are a seasoned CPAP veteran or someone who is just starting on CPAP therapy, we are sure you will learn a thing or two from this article.

Get more comfortable with your CPAP machine by incorporating some of these tips into your daily routine.

1. Practice using your CPAP machine during the day

Using a CPAP machine for the first time can feel overwhelming. Like learning anything new, it takes time to feel comfortable with what you are trying to do.

One of the best ways to build up your confidence is to set up and use your CPAP machine during the day while you are awake. This will help you adjust to both the sensation of wearing a CPAP mask on your face and receiving air from your CPAP machine.

We recommend you try using your machine while doing an activity, such as:

  • Reading a book/magazine
  • Listening to music
  • Relaxing

Over time, you should become more comfortable with your CPAP machine and be able to increase your usage hours.

2. Maintain a positive mindset

It is important to stay positive and keep an open mind when starting out on CPAP therapy. If you struggle to stay motivated or have issues with your mask or machine, reach out for support.

If you maintain a positive mindset towards your therapy, you are much more likely to succeed.

To maintain a positive mindset, try this tip:

Write down what factors motivated you to start CPAP therapy in the first place. Was it to improve your health, feel better during the day, or have more energy when you’re with your kids?

If you find that you are struggling with CPAP therapy, take a look back at what you have written and use this as motivation to continue on.

3. Be persistent

Even when times are tough, it is important to be persistent and continue to use your machine as much as you can.

If you are unable to use your CPAP machine every night, try using your machine every second night instead. Set short-term actionable goals that are achievable to help you stay on track with therapy.

4. Make sure you have the right mask

When you first start out on CPAP therapy, you will want to make sure you have the right sized mask. This means having a mask that has been properly fitted and sits comfortably on your face.

5. Gradually increase your usage hours

If you are unable to sleep with your CPAP machine for the entire night, then you may want to try slowly increasing the amount of time you are using your machine. For instance, if you were able to use your machine for 30 minutes on your first night of CPAP therapy, try to use it for a bit longer the next night.

This will help you get more comfortable with treatment and help build up the number of hours you are using your machine each night.

6. Set up your CPAP machine before bedtime

After a long day, you may be tempted to jump straight into bed and fall asleep without your CPAP machine. A great way to combat this is to have your CPAP mask and device all set up and ready to go before you plan on heading to sleep.

Here is a list of tasks you should try to have completed before bedtime:

  • Assemble your CPAP mask
  • Ensure tubing is correctly fitted to your machine
  • Fill your humidifier up with distilled water
