Mechanical ventilation

Spontaneous ventilation can be assisted or replaced by delivering mechanical ventilation through positive airway pressure or negative airway pressure to the chest wall. The main objectives of mechanical ventilation are;

  • To help improve gas exchange and optimise lung function
  • To reduce the work of breathing
  • To correct hypoxaemia and respiratory axcidosis
  • To help stabilise the chest wall in the presence of chest trauma or surgery
  • To help reduce left ventricular (LV) afterload that may lead to an improved cardiac function
